Malaysia - Sarawak Disaster Management Committee to assist durian farmers

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee is intent on working out a mechanism for durian farmers in areas under Covid-19 lockdown to bring out their fruits to the market. Its chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said he would discuss with the divisional health department to work out a suitable arrangement.

“We have to work out an arrangement to help the affected farmers as durian is a perishable fruit and must be collected as soon as possible,” he said after visiting Top Fruits Sdn Bhd, which is operating the Durian Collecting, Processing and Packaging Centre (CPPC) at Tarat. “It has not been a bumper season for the fruit here, but Top Fruit will continue to buy whatever is available.”

Uggah, who is Deputy Chief Minister and Sarawak’s Agriculture Modernisation, Native Land and Regional Development Minister said it was an anchor company specialising in fresh durian, frozen durian paste and durian processing for export overseas. It started in 2018 and exported its first consignment of 16 tons to China.
