According to the National Agrifood Health, Safety, and Quality Service (Senasica), Tamaulipas will harvest up to 40% fewer lemons due to weather factors, such as the frosts at the beginning of the year and the subsequent drought.
The region was going to produce 120,000 tons of lemons but it will only produce 64,000 tons. Despite this fall, exports to the United States won't decline.
On average, Tamaulipas exports about 22,000 tons of lemons to the US market each year. "The remaining 42,000 tons will be sold in Mexico," Senasica stated.
The main Italian-lemon producing area is located in Llera, Victoria, Padilla, and Güémez.
