India - Farmers urged to insure crops

Collector N. Venkatachalam appealed to farmers to insure paddy, pulses and other crops for the kharif season to manage crop loss owing to natural calamities.
In a press release here on Wednesday, he said that insurance cover for paddy per acre was ₹23,200 and total premium ₹371.20, for maize insured amount was ₹18,500 and premium was ₹370, for sorghum and cumbu insured amount was ₹7,100 and premium ₹142.20, for black gram, green gram, thur dhal and other pulses insured amount ₹13,000 and premium ₹260, for groundnut insured sum ₹17,200 and premium ₹218, for gingili insured amount ₹10,900 and premium ₹218, for banana insured amount ₹46,350, and premium ₹237.50, for onion insured amount ₹25,300 and premium ₹316.25 and for tapioca insured amount ₹25,000 and premium ₹275. Crop insurance would cover crop loss, prevented sowing and post-harvest loss due to rain and other natural calamities, he added.

The last date for remittance of premium amount for crop insurance for paddy crop for kharif season is July 31 and for other crops August 15, according to Joint Director of Agriculture M. Thangasamy.
In a press release here, he said that farmers could pay premium and insure their crop for kharif season under the Prime Minister Fasal Bima Yojana on production of Aadhaar card, chitta, adangal and farmers’ bank passbook through one of the 80 common service centres in the district or through PACSs, commercial banks and nationalised banks and agri-insurance companies, he added.
