The Boulder County Parks and Open Space Agricultural Resources Division announced on Twitter that there was "unbelievably devastating hail damage this afternoon for farmers in Boulder County." The agency posted a photograph of damaged crops near U.S. 287 and Niwot Road.
Mike Munson, of Munson Farms, said that his land got hit with two hailstorms Monday, which he said mostly wiped out the spring crops like spinach and lettuce. He added that his sweet corn and pumpkins are young enough that they will likely recover.
"I don't know about my tomatoes, yet," he said. "They took a pretty bad hit, and they are pretty delicate, so we are waiting for the next couple of days to see what happens."
Munson said that his land was hit by a nasty hailstorm about 12 years ago, which left about 20 acres of different crops indistinguishable from one another, but he added that such destructive weather is unusual.
On Monday, marble-sized hail began falling west of Boulder at about 6 p.m. and the southeastern parts of the county caught word of the storm at about 8 p.m. where hailstones as large as 3 inches wide were reported.
