Residents of Boulder County spent Tuesday surveying the aftermath of a storm on Monday that dropped 3-inch hailstones. Russell Danielson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said that 1.25-inch hail was reported in south Longmont and south of Hygiene, and 1-inch hail was reported two miles northwest of Niwot. "It was worse yesterday, for Boulder County at least," Danielson said. Early forecasts that stated more large hail was possible didn't pan out, though much of Boulder County was under a tornado watch for of the day. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Firestone and Frederick shortly after 1 p.m. because of a radar-indicated tornado. A tornado was spotted four miles south east of Prospect Valley in Weld County that is being blamed for blowing over a semi-trailer. The agency posted a photograph of damaged crops near U.S. 287 and Niwot Road. Mike Munson, of Munson Farms, said that his land got hit with two hailstorms Monday, which he said mostly wiped out the spring crops like spinach and lettuce. He added that his sweet corn and pumpkins are young enough that they will likely recover. "I don't know about my tomatoes, yet," he said. "They took a pretty bad hit, and they are pretty delicate, so we are waiting for the next couple of days to see what happens." Munson said that his land was hit by a nasty hailstorm about 12 years ago, which left about 20 acres of different crops indistinguishable from one another, but he added that such destructive weather is unusual. On Monday, marble-sized hail began falling west of Boulder at about 6 p.m. and the southeastern parts of the county caught word of the storm at about 8 p.m. where hailstones as large as 3 inches wide were reported.
