With the growing season just a few months away, local farmers must decide whether to buy crop insurance.
Last year, farmers nationwide insured about 88 percent of the 88 million acres of corn.
Corn, soybeans, and wheat are all insurable crops in the state of Wisconsin.
Depending on what the farmer wants--insurance can cover everything from plant disease to adverse weather conditions such as drought.
March 15th is the sign-up deadline for farmers interested in insurance for their corn and soybeans.
"Every producer's got different needs, different coverage levels, different things they are looking to protect. Some are worried about price protection, others need a guaranteed bushels per acre,"said Matt Oppriecht, Crop Insurance Specialist for Badgerland Insurance.
For farmers who do insure their crops--they must have their seed planted by a certain date to be covered. The final plant date for corn this year is May 31st. The final plant date is June 10th for soybeans.
