Florida farmers who have had crops, dairy and livestock go to waste during the pandemic are eligible for federal relief, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday. The USDA will administer $16 billion in Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) funding to help American farmers, said Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Nikki Fried.
Chrysanthemum farmers in Udupi district have suffered losses due to inclement weather at the beginning of the season and then due to the lockdown. Chrysanthemum is cultivated in about 60 acres at Hemmady and Katbelthur villages in Udupi district for generations, and is popularly known as ‘Hemmady Sevantige.’
Flower growers may apply for compensation towards their crop loss in Nadakacheri offices or taluk horticulture department offices, Deputy Commissioner Annies Kanmani Joy said. Speaking at a district-level meeting held at DC's office on Thursday, she said that floriculturists would be provided with Rs 10,000 per acre.
Farmers from several villages of Rohtak district whose crops had been damaged due to untimely rain and hailstorm in the last six months are still awaiting compensation for the losses. Surveys were conducted to assess the extent of damage caused to crops not covered under the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme, but so far no compensation has been provided to the farmers.
Vizianagaram Joint Collector G.C. Kishore Kumar said that compensation would be paid to farmers who have lost their crops due to heavy gales in various mandals, including Gantyada, Gajapathi Nagaram, Vizianagaram and other places. Mr. Kishore Kumar visited Mandanapuram village of Gantyada mandal on Thursday to gain first-hand information about the damage to banana crops.
Major farmers group Bharatiya Kisan Union has demanded a ₹1.5-lakh crore relief package for farmers affected by COVID-19 and lockdown, along with a four-fold increase in the PM-KISAN income support scheme. This comes even as Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar sidestepped questions about a farm sector relief package, saying existing government measures were sufficient.
Agriculture Minister Kurasala Kannababu said here on Monday that various crops, mostly paddy, were damaged in over 8,300 hectares across the State due to rains in the last two days. Mr. Kannababu, who inspected the paddy fields in East Godavari district, promised support to the farmers by procuring the damaged paddy (discolored paddy) by offering the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
