Livestock farmers in Lyantonde district have appealed to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries to combat an outbreak of a strange disease in cattle. Dr Ronald Bameka, the district veterinary ofﬁcer, said the rare strain has killed more than 300 head of cattle. According to Bameka, the disease was ﬁrst reported in April when several farmers lost cattle.
The Gujarat government would provide an assistance of Rs 900 per month to farmers who switch to "cow-based organic farming", it said. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Nitin Patel while presenting a Rs 2,17,287 crore budget for 2020-21. The government intends to cover around 50,000 farmers under the scheme, he said.
After farmer Manza Bulacho’s crops were wiped out in a drought that devastated parts of Ethiopia in 2017, the father of 10 hoped a cow could keep him going. Bulacho, 42, who lives near the city of Arba Minch in southern Ethiopia, joined a program that helped him borrow money to purchase a dairy cow and get it insured.
A total of 32 cows have taken up residence in “the world’s first” floating farm in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The cows arrived in their new home, Monday, May 13. The cows’ floating shed features: A milk robot; a slurry robot; an automatic belt feeder; and a rubber floor. There is also space ‘on board’ for education and presentations.

As we all know, the extreme weather conditions experienced in 2018 led to an increase in cow throughput and, in the end, beef production which – according to the report – jumped by 1.8% and was greater than anticipated. In 2018, the EU cow herd decreased by 1.3%; beef cow numbers dropped by 100,000 head.
In an attempt to eradicate a disease-causing bacteria from cows, politicians and industry heads in New Zealand agreed on Monday to kill some 150,000 of the creatures. If all goes as hoped with the slaughter, New Zealand would be the first country to have registered an infection and successfully remove Mycoplasma bovis from its herds.
Joshua Otieno, a farmer in Nyakach, Kisumu County, watched in disbelief as his cows collapsed and died one after the other. By midday yesterday, more than 150 cows, including some that belonged to his neighbours in Rangul village, lay dead under unknown circumstances. A Beaudesert farmer has found six cows lying dead, all in a straight line, after thunderstorms in south-east Queensland. Derek Shirley said there was not a mark on any of them. "There was just a storm, it was a pretty severe storm, there were a few cracks of lightning and thunder and then there was one particularly loud one and that's all we heard," he said.
About 50 dead cows that had been improperly disposed of were found on a farm west of Burlington this week, with the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office seizing 29 living cows from the property. After complaints from neighbors and an investigation by Animal Control Officer Emily Diaz, the sheriff’s office on Tuesday served a search warrant on the property in the 12300 block of Bay View Cemetery Road and located about 200 cows, some of which were dead.
Dairy farmers in the North Rift region have been advised to seek insurance services for their cattle. This is to prevent huge losses in case of diseases outbreak or any other calamity that can lead to death of cattle. Agriculture Principal Secretary said many dairy farmers in North Rift have failed to insure their dairy cattle and have ended up counting huge losses after sudden death of the cows. He said the cows are usually bought expensively besides extra costs of feeding, thus the need to be insured against any natural occurrences such as sudden death or sickness.
A freak blizzard killed at least 15,000 dairy cows in the US state of Texas and for almost two days kept farmers from milking some of those that survived, officials said Monday. The brutal winter storm dumped heavy snow on the northern part of Texas on December 26. Farmers have not yet fully assessed the damage. They're still trying to dig out, but at least it stopped snowing, a spokeswoman for the Texas Association of Dairymen, told AFP.
