Warmer temperatures caused by climate change are projected to boost insect activity and lead to more crop loss, a new study from the University of Washington warns. The hotter weather will speed up the “metabolic rates” of the world’s insect population, causing the critters to eat more, the study authors found. Warmer temperatures also are expected to increase the reproductive rates of insects, the study said.
In China, people breathe air thick with the lung-damaging pollutant ozone two to six times more often than people in the United States, Europe, Japan, or South Korea, according to a new assessment. By one metric -- total number of days with daily maximum average ozone values (8-hour average) greater than 70 ppb -- China had twice as many high ozone days as Japan and South Korea, three times more than the United States, and six times more than Europe.
Malaysia’s palm oil output is expected to drop to 19.8 million tonnes in 2018 as compared to 19.92 million tonnes recorded in 2017 due to lower yields, said Oil World executive director Thomas Mielke. "Yield trend is declining. There was a strong recovery seen in production last year and the first four to five months of this year, but it is temporary. "It’s not continuing,” Mielke said during his presentation at the Malaysian Palm Oil Trade Fair and Seminar (POTS) 2018 here today.
Cage fish farmers across Ernakulam district suffered massive losses in the recent floods. Farmers of Pizhala, Kadamakkudy, Kothad, Aluva, Gothuruthu, and Kottappuram had seen their fish cages getting washed away, and fish had either gone missing or were dead,” said P.V. Santhosh of Thottakkattukara near Aluva. A senior scientist at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), which has been encouraging farmers to take up cage fish farming, said most farmers lived near waterbodies that saw massive flooding.
German grain production is at its lowest since 1993. The German Farmers’ Association (DBV) has estimated a 22% drop in the country’s grain harvest this season. This is 26% below the country’s five-year average for grain production. The organisation estimates the total amount of winter wheat produced to be at 18.6 million tonnes. This is 23% less than 2017. The DBV estimates Germany’s total grain production for 2018 at 35.6 million tonnes. This is down 400,000t from the group’s estimate at the beginning of August.
The devastating floods that have left a trail of destruction will cripple the state’s agriculture production in a major way in the current year, especially rice. As per the primary analysis by the the state agriculture department, around 56,844.44 ha of cropped area has been affected by the floods, causing a loss of Rs 1355.68 crore to 3.14 lakh farmers. Justin Mohan, director, Agriculture Department, said this is only an indicative loss, and that the actual loss will be very high as the majority of the affected farmers are still languishing in flood relief camps.
Recent drought has led to the loss of some 280,000 hectares of beans and maize in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, potentially affecting the food and nutrition situation of more than two million people, two United Nations agencies warned. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) are concerned by the fact that the months of June and July saw “lower-than-average rainfall” and “drier-than-average conditions”, which affected the first and principal crop cycle in Central America.
While the catastrophe on the northern potato fields is becoming increasingly clear, growers and marketers in Southern Germany expect a slightly below-average harvest. Especially in Bavaria, there were only occasional weather extremes in recent weeks, which is why the growth of tubers was not significantly affected and today's producer prices are in a satisfactory level (€18-20 per 100 kg), and, since the local industry is increasingly focusing on exports, there are also interesting sales markets beyond its borders.
Late-season rains and somewhat cooler temperatures have not been enough to turn the average corn and soybean crop condition around. USDA’s August 20 Crop Progress report announced 68 percent of the U.S. corn crop in good-to-excellent condition, down 2 percentage points from the prior week. The good-to-excellent ratings are still above the prior year’s level of 62 percent and the same as the five-year average.
The clean cold experts at Dearman have launched a new project aiming to reduce wasted harvest in South Africa. The project is backed by grant funds from the Department for International Development. Food waste in South Africa is estimated to be worth US$6 billion annually, half of which occurs in the fruit and vegetable sector. Low farmer income makes access to cooling technology difficult. Dearman’s 24-month project seeks to develop a mobile pre-cooling system, using the company’s liquid nitrogen engine.
The storm on Wednesday evening came with wind, heavy rain and hail, causing widespread crop damage, stripping twigs and needles from cedar trees in the canyons. It also left piles of hail that remained southeast and southwest of Maxwell well into Thursday afternoon. There were areas where the storm seemed to unleash the height of its fury. One of those was the home of Rob and Barbara Robinson in Boxelder Canyon southwest of Maxwell.
