Augusta County has seen more than 15 inches of rain this summer, and that rain has caused some issues for a Valley brewery. Stable Craft Brewery grows a lot of its own hops, which have been damaged by the extensive rain and storms. As of August 14, the area has surpassed 40 inches of rain for the year, putting 2018 in the top 30 wettest years on record for the Shenandoah Valley, even with four months to go.
For Kauai farmers, recovering from a major flood event is more complicated that just removing silt. As communities continue the process of recovery, growers are looking at the long process of bringing their impacted fields back into production. This is a significant challenge for farmers of perennial crops that are not propagated from seeds, including important local crops like taro, sweet potato, and banana. It can be difficult to obtain sufficient cuttings to plant a new crop.

The harvest of wheat and barley in Bulgaria is drawing to a close. Like in the major Black Sea countries (Ukraine, Russia), first these crops suffered from drought in the grain formation period, and then from abundant rains at the height of the harvest. These agrometeorological conditions affected both yield and quality of grain. In Bulgaria, wheat and barley yields in the course of harvesting are 8-10% lower than last year.
The Czech grain harvest is expected to drop by 7.5 percent on the previous year, hitting an overall yield of 6.345 tonnes, according to preliminary data released by the Czech Statistics Office on Monday. It is third lowest figure over the past ten years. The harvest of poppy seeds will also be affected by this year’s prolonged period of drought, dropping by one fourth on the previous year to 15,000 tonnes.
The potato processing industry sees trouble on the horizon. The dry weather could mean a potato harvest with low yields and small sizes. For potato processors, this means high prices, smaller chips, and a limited choice. "There is already talk of 30% fewer potatoes. That is huge", says Tom Demeyer of Belgian chip manufacturer, Roger & Roger. This company tries to use as many local Belgian potatoes in its processing as possible.
Cotton farmers of Gujarat are expecting a lower yield and crop failure due to insufficient rains in the state thus far. The state has similar acreage of cotton this year as it was last year but at the crucial growing period many cotton growing areas, mainly in Saurashtra and North Gujarat are still dry and do not have enough irrigation facilities. According to farmers and cotton industry experts, it will be harmful for standing cotton crop if the state does not have good spell of monsoon instantly.
Due to a prolonged heatwave and drought, Denmark's harvest of wheat, barley, oat and triticale could drop about 40 percent compared with previous years. According to the Danish Agriculture & Food Council (DAFC), the low harvest will cause a loss of 6.4 billion Danish kroner (about 995 million U.S. dollars) to Danish farmers. The Danish government has approved a series of aid measures for farmers.
Germany’s 2018 grain harvest will be the lowest in 24 years after a drought and heatwave heavily damaged crops, the association of German farm cooperatives DRV said on Wednesday. The grain crop will fall 20.3 percent to some 36.3 million tonnes, the smallest since 1994, the association said in a harvest report. Germany is among several north European countries which have suffered widespread damage to this summer’s harvest from drought and heatwave, with Germany recording the highest July temperatures since 1881.
