Freezes and frosts have damaged more than half of the Christmas tree crop in some parts of Nova Scotia this spring. The council has been talking with the provincial Agriculture Department and the Federation of Agriculture on possible emergency funding to help growers. Bonnyman didn’t have a damage estimate but noted that Nova Scotia growers export at least $15 million in trees each year.
Residents of Boulder County spent Tuesday surveying the aftermath of a storm on Monday that dropped 3-inch hailstones.A meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said that 1.25-inch hail was reported in south Longmont and south of Hygiene, and 1-inch hail was reported two miles northwest of Niwot.
Severe flooding over the weekend has many low-lying soybean fields underwater. As the water dissipates yield potential and replant questions will arise. Flooding can be divided into either water-logging, where only the roots are flooded, or complete submergence where the entire plants are under water. Water-logging is more common than complete submergence and is also less damaging.
Heavy rains coupled with high-speed wind that lashed different parts of Idukki district in the last four days caused extensive damage to standing crops in nearly 1.26 hectare, agriculture department officials said on Tuesday after preliminary estimates. Although the heavy rain brought a lot of respite to the people from scorching temperatures which had soared 38 degrees Celsius in several parts of the district, they also caused a lot of misery to the farmers by damaging crops which were almost for harvest.
A hailstorm in the Akseki district of Antalya damaged grapevines in the area. An official reported that grapevines over an area of 350,000 square feet, which were owned by 23 growers in total, were affected negatively by the hailstorm. The branches are broken, the leaves were torn from the trees, it is not possible to get good products from these trees anymore.
RECENT heavy rains and floods in some parts of Negros Occidental left an initial damage and production losses of almost P6.5 million to the province’s agro-fishery sector. Partial report of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) showed that in Victorias City, 240 hectares of rice farms were affected by northeast monsoon rains that triggered floods.
Coldiretti Reggio Calabria reported that strong winds and storms have hit the Ionian coast of the Reggio Calabria province for over 22 hours on 3rd and 4th January 2018. Surveys are underway to assess the damage. The municipalities of Bianco, Africo, Brancaleone, Palizzi, Bova, Bova Marina, Condofuri, San Lorenzo, Roghudi, Roccaforte and Montebello Ionico were particularly affected.
While Hurricane Harvey had no effect in West Texas, it wreaked havoc in Texas’ second-largest growing area, the coastal bend from south of Corpus Christi to south of Houston. A Texas Tech professor estimated that agricultural industries in Texas and Florida lost about $500 million due to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The U.S. House of Representatives recently announced an $81 billion disaster aid package for natural disaster assistance. The two hurricanes caused more than $250 billion in combined damages.
A tornado demolished a large area of greenhouses in El Eljido, Spain, on Saturday. First estimates suggest an acreage of 200 hectare being damaged and demolished. Photos and videos of the tornado show complete covers being torn apart. El Ejido is located between Almeria and Motril and is known best for its pepper cultivation. "Also eggplant and cucumber greenhouses were demolished, but mainly the pepper nurseries have been hit the hardest", an employee of a Spanish cooperation tells us.
Typhoon Vinta (international code name Tembin) destroyed P237.13 million worth of crops and livestock and affected 19,273 hectares of agricultural land, according to the latest data from the Department of Agriculture (DA). Field Programs Operational Planning Division Engr. Christopher V. Morales said that as of January 3, about 4,909 metric tons (MT) of crops in Regions 9, 11, 12 and 13 were damaged by the typhoon.
More than a month after cyclone Ockhiuprooted lakhs of trees and also destroyed plantations across the district, farmers in some of the affected areas say that officials from the revenue, horticulture and agriculture departments are yet to conduct a survey of losses suffered by them. Statistics from the horticulture and agriculture departments show that crops and trees cultivated on 6,006 hectares (14,841 acres) was destroyed by the cyclone on November 29 and 30, affecting 31,247 farmers.
