Wildfire which spread in the Asante-Akim Central Municipality in Ghana, ravaged more than 20,000 hectares of cash and food crop farms and has raised fears of imminent famine in the area. In all, about 10,000 farmers in six communities – Dwease, Praaso, Boatengkrom, Nsiakrom, Beposo and Nyamebekyere were affected. The uncontrolled fire, fanned by strong winds and the dry conditions, raged for three days running, laying to waste cocoa, plantain, cassava and cocoyam, citrus and other crops.
The heat and the strong sun are damaging the melons and watermelons. This year's harvest was very small, nearly 80% of what was cultivated rotted, said a producer from Cambyreta. The watermelons burst, sometimes because they are ripe and other times because the sun is too strong and cracks them. The round ones burst the most. About 24,000 hectares of crops established in the agricultural valleys of southern Sonora were partially or totally damaged by the frost caused by the fifth winter storm. The head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, Fisheries and Aquaculture (SAGARPA), Julio Corona Valenzuela, met with the affected farmers to check the damage that the frost caused on the crops. So far there are 24,000 hectares affected by the frost, partially and totally, in the agricultural valleys of Yaqui and Mayo.
In Tuticorin, a port city in India, severe monsoon rains have damaged 3,048 hectares of banana crops. On Monday 4 January officials were still ascertaining the damage caused to other crops and a report is expected to be submitted Wednesday 6 January. Apart from banana, crops such as chillies and onions were also damaged in the rains. The State government had already announced compensation for crop damage. As for damages caused to irrigated banana crop, compensation of Rs.13,500 was fixed per hectare and Rs.7,410 as compensation for damage caused to a hectare of rain-fed crop.
A hail storm on Christmas Eve is estimated to have written off about $6 million worth of cotton in southern Queensland. St George agronomist said the storm looked to have damaged about 1,200 hectares of crop across nine farms. He said the thumb-sized hail had torn through the cotton at a delicate stage of production.

A super El Nino has climatologists forecasting a delayed winter with rising and falling temperatures, which could affect many fruit tree and nut bearing tree crops. A sudden freeze on May 23, 2015 wiped out half of Ontario's apple crop this year, affecting farmers across the province including Eastern Ontario.
The unseasonal rain has washed away the hopes of farmers in the coastal district of Kendrapara who were expecting a bumper kharif crop. Heavy rain lashed the district last week damaging paddy and seasonal vegetables crops. The unseasonal rain also damaged vegetable crop on several acr es of land besides pulses in many parts of the district. Crop damage has been reported in several villages of Aul, Mahakalapada, Rajnagar, Marsaghai and Garadapur blocks.
Farmers of Munimpur and Kukdola villages have accused the Reliance Company of destroying their mustard and wheat crops spread over 50 acres. Though the crops were cultivated over the land bought by the Reliance for setting up special economic zone (SEZ) nine years ago, farmers said since the SEZ was de-notified, no one could stop them to do farming works over there. Reliance officials along with significant number of private security guards came to the village during the past week and ruined the standing crop of mustard and wheat crop sowed last month.
