As the Australian heatwave is spilling across the Tasman and pushing up temperatures in New Zealand, we take a look at the conditions that caused a similar event last year and the impacts it had. Last summer’s heatwave gave New Zealand its warmest summer and the warmest January on record. It covered an area of four million square kilometres (comparable to the Indian subcontinent), including the land, the eastern Tasman Sea and the Pacific east of New Zealand to the Chatham Islands.
Located east of Madagascar, the small island nation of Mauritius has experienced economic success. A new form of fish farming, known as cage culture, is expanding in flowing water of rivers and canals in various parts of the country, raising hopes for an increased production of fish. Fishes, mostly tilapia, are now farmed in nearly 6,000 cages in rivers where such farming did not exist even a decade ago.
Commissioner of Fisheries C Suvarna suggested on Thursday some preventive and control measures to be taken by the fishermen during the summer season to avoid economic losses, due to prevailing high temperature, high density of fish in tanks, gradual reduction of water levels, deficiency of dissolved oxygen and deterioration in the quality of water, etc. When the problem is severe, there are possibilities of mass mortality of fish in tanks.
New research has found that climate change will cause dramatic impacts in the world's fisheries, but with effective management most fisheries could yield more fish and more prosperity, even with a changing climate. Relative to today, this preliminary research illustrates that effective management reforms can lead, globally, to a nearly 90 per cent increase in profits, a third more fish in the water and a more than 10 per cent increase in harvest by 2100 in the face of climate change.
The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC)-6 encouraged the fisherfolk in Western Visayas to avail of the Fisheries Insurance Program offered by the agency. PCIC-6 Regional Manager Charlito Brilleta said that they provide insurance protection to fish farmers/fisherfolk/growers against losses in unharvested crop or stock in fisheries farms due to natural calamities and fortuitous events.
After eight years of research, the $2 million staged project had been successfully producing fish for the Australian domestic market for five months. Now more than half of the fish in the trial have died and others are continuing to perish. The fish farm trial was commissioned to determine if it was commercially viable grow fish off Geraldton's coast, and its success had been attracting interest from overseas investors. Indian Ocean Fresh Australia managing director Erica Starling is overseeing the project.
The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) will invest around MXN 3.6 billion (USD 205.2 million) this year for insurance in agriculture, aquaculture and fisheries sector in the country. Through the Department of Rural Development the Agricultural Claims Component is operated to Serve Small Producers, of the Rural Productivity Program, by which schemes will be expanded and will, for the first time, make it available to producers, innovative instruments for the insurance of aquaculture, beekeeping and fisheries sectors.
