In some companies the situation became so acute that crop damage could only be averted by emergency measures at the last moment. Comprehensive risk prevention, such as adequately dimensioned wells or rainwater retention basins, should remain an important component of operational risk management in the future. The drought summers of 2018 and 2019 also showed, however, that despite comprehensive precautions, extreme weather events can represent a considerable operational risk. From 1 July, the GV trades and includes the risk of "drought" for irrigated crops in its insurance product HORTISECUR G in the cover against storm and natural hazards free of premium. Irrigated open-air production such as container crops or cut flowers are also insured free of charge, provided that the crops are covered by the HORTISECUR F insurance product. Crops planted in grown soil are not covered, provided that they are not normally irrigated, such as tree nursery crops and some cut flowers. The insurance cover covers loss of yield due to unavoidable drought damage to previously healthy plants. A precondition is that the safety regulations "drought" were observed in the event of damage.
