A mango plantation of about 45-hectares near Dambai, in the Krachi East Municipality of the Volta region, has been consumed by wild fire. Michael Gyato, Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources who owns the farm told the media that although bushfires were a common occurrence in the region, he suspects arson because a similar incident occurred in 2009.
He said management of the farm had put in place adequate measures including an extensive fire-belt around the whole acreage. Gyato, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Krachi East Constituency, said only about 1.5 hectares of the plantation survived the fire, which also destroyed drip irrigation equipment worth millions of Cedis.
The Deputy Minister has stated that the police is investigating the incident. The mango farm, established in 2008, also had an adjoining 12-hectare teak plantation and provides jobs for 80 workers.
