The attack of top borer insect on sugarcane crop has resulted in loss to farmers of the region. The most affected variety is CO 0238, which has been cultivated in a large area of the region. Scientists of the Karnal-based Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Regional Centre, told the farmers to eradicate moths at this stage as the time was appropriate to manage top borer through mechanical collections by using pheromone traps. They say the current harvesting season is about to end, but farmers should save the next crop by managing the insects. Field study by scientists show that in some parts of Haryana, including Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat, Yamunanagar and Ambala, the insect has damaged the crop to 40-50 per cent, while in eastern and western UP, Bihar and other parts of the north India, it has affected the crop by 30-40 per cent. Based on the field study, scientists have issued an advisory to farmers and exhorted them to be vigilant in the fields during day time to check the insect.
