India - Farmers furious over crop damage report

The naib tehsildar of Balsamand has prepared report on the damage to cotton crop due to whitefly, which neither farmers trust nor does anyone else. The report says that whitefly caused a uniform 10% damage to the crop in all the 19 affected villages.

Following the release of report on September 4, the office- bearers of All India Kisan Sabha on Sunday held an online meeting, in which district secretary Dharambir Kanwari alleged that the official has issued a fake and arbitrary ‘girdawari’ (survey) report, which was prepared without visiting the fields. Farmers of the district are feeling cheated and would protest at Balasamand tehsil and Hisar mini secretariat on Monday, he said. Slamming the report, district president of the farmer body Shamsher Singh Numbardar said the Kisan Sabha would protest against the entry of any administrative officer and political leader into the villages and instead conduct a ‘Pol- Kholo’ campaign. On the same lines, former minister and BJP leader Sampat Singh said the naib tehsildar has rubbed salt on the wounds of farmers by showing only 10% cotton crop loss in the Balsamand tehsil. Sampat also sent an email to deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala on the issue and informed him of the anguish prevailing among the farmers. He wrote that apart from cotton, the crops of guar, moth bean, etc have also been damaged by over 70% in the state.

BJP district president Bhupendra Singh said the state government is serious about compensating the farmers for the losses incurred due to the whitefly attack. Survey work has been completed in many areas for the purpose, while it is going on in many villages, he added.
