India - Weather dashes hopes of apple growers in Himachal Pradesh

The dry spell in the winter, followed by a rainy summer with hailstorms have damaged the prospects of a good apple crop this year. Himachal Pradesh, that saw its apple production in 2017 halved already, may harvest even less in 2018. Certain pockets in the apple belt of Shimla - which normally produces over 70 percent of the total crop in HP - are very badly affected.
“We may get less than half the crop this time because of shifting and wavering weather patterns. The flowering did not take place properly due to a dry winter, and heavy rains and hailstorms thereafter have done much damage,” said Naresh Chauhan, who has a sprawling apple orchard in Kotkhai.
The apple economy of HP annually runs into Rs 40 billion, with some 15,000 families dependent on it. The Shimla district tops production, followed by Kullu and Kinnaur.
