Sowing progress has been quite satisfactory till last week except in the state of MP. The Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA) now anticipates a crop damage of 10-12% on account of heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh (MP). This estimate is based on a survey undertaken by the industry body in the rain-affected areas of the state.
Persistent bursts of torrential rain, particularly in central and western India, is threatening crop output that was so far expected to rise to a new record and make agriculture the best performer in the Covid-hit economy. The southwest monsoon has turned vigorous in August after a deficient July, raising fears of floods and triggering pest attacks on crops.
As fear of flood looms large in several districts with water flowing over danger level and rivers inundating farmlands, farmers are fearing crop loss.The State is experiencing incessant rainfall since Tuesday due to back to back low pressure over the Bay of Bengal and six districts have received more than 100 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours causing water logging.
The Soybean Oil Processors Association (SOPA) expects a crop damage of 10-12 per cent for the oilseed on account of heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh, the largest soyabean-producing State. Based on a quick field survey of rain-hit areas in MP, SOPA said the most affected districts are Indore, Dewas, Ujjain, Dhar, Sehore, Harda, Shajapur, Mandsaur and Neemuch.
River Godavari in spate has kept the government machinery on high alert in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The river is flowing at dangerous levels at several points and has inundated many low-lying areas in the two states. The flood intensity is very high in the Bhadradri-Kothagudem of Telangana, East and West Godavari districts in Andhra Pradesh.

North Bengal in the foothills of eastern Himalayas supports less than two percent of India’s total elephant population.
