The Soybean Oil Processors Association (SOPA) expects a crop damage of 10-12 per cent for the oilseed on account of heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh, the largest soyabean-producing State. Based on a quick field survey of rain-hit areas in MP, SOPA said the most affected districts are Indore, Dewas, Ujjain, Dhar, Sehore, Harda, Shajapur, Mandsaur and Neemuch.
River Godavari in spate has kept the government machinery on high alert in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The Darjeeling tea industry is in “bad shape” as the production has been severely hit due to phases of lockdown and excessive rain in the hills, an official of the planters’ association said on Thursday. The garden owners are anticipating losses this year as the output will be lower than the annual production of about seven million kg, Darjeeling Indian Tea Association secretary Mohan Chhetri said.
Ramalingam, an 80-year-old farmer of Mathur village in Tamil Nadu’s Ariyalur district, visited a common service centre (CSC) in his village on July 31 to get his groundnut crop insured for this kharif season under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). Ramalingam has been cultivating different crops from groundnut to black gram for the past many years. In 2018, his crop got damaged due to natural calamity, thereby, incurring a huge financial loss.

In the last few years, the share of non-loanee farmers who opted for the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bhima Yogna (PMFBY) is far more than those who opted for crop loans from financial institutions.
