Monitoring the health of livestock and crops with the assistance of drones will be “run of the mill” in 10 years’ time, according to Drone Consultants Ireland Director. He was showcasing a crop-spraying drone at the National Ploughing Championships in Co Offaly on Tuesday. The device, which carries about 15 litres, can be used to identify and treat damaged crops without damaging the surrounding produce.
Winter crops had a fantastic start last autumn, but a series of winter storms have caused significant losses, according to Teagasc’s latest crop update. It says an estimated 500ha has been lost from salt burn along the south coast while many fields have bare patches as a result of water-logging and reduced plant counts compared to 2015. Meanwhile, Teagasc says the current estimates for 2016 winter crops are: Wheat (60,000 ha) Barley (75,000 ha) Oats (12,000 ha) Rape (7,000 ha).

The report, Ireland’s Co-operative Sector, forms part of a review of the legislative and organisational framework for co-operatives in Ireland being undertaken by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. The report identifies some of the key challenges and opportunities for Irish co-operatives for the future.
