According to Hector Castro, a Honduran producer, independent producers have reported that the storms Eta and Iota ravaged 2,520 hectares of banana cultivation, a figure that may increase with a better evaluation of damages. The transnational Chiquita reported damages in more than 1,200 hectares of its plantations.
This week, Central America faced another hurricane only two weeks after Hurricane Eta raged through the region. Making landfall on Monday evening in Nicaragua, Hurricane Iota moved through Honduras and eventually dissipated in El Salvador. While Iota was downgraded to a tropical storm shortly after landing, the rains and winds that it brought with it have done extensive damage to the infrastructure in the countries it passed through, as well as in Guatemala.

Hurricane Iota landed at a Category 4 storm, though it has since been downgraded to a Tropical Storm and is moving along the coastline toward the west.

Crop damage caused by Typhoon Ulysses (international name: Vamco) has nearly doubled to P2.11 billion as of Sunday, from the prior estimate of P1.17 million, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said. Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Floyd Green yesterday detailed a $647-million preliminary emergency relief package for farming communities impacted by the continuous rainfall and flooding across the island.
