A water tank was breached in the Penchikalapadu village here on Saturday after monsoon rains thundered over the region, drowning standing paddy and chili crops. According to Srinu, a farmer who suffered crop losses due to the inundation, this was the second time the bund of the tank had been breached in the last month.
Paddy crops across the district suffered heavy damage in the rain that lashed the district in the past week. District agricultural authorities put the loss at ₹7 crore to paddy farmers. Official figures indicate that 467 hectares of paddy was damaged in the last two weeks. The crop loss was heavier at Alathur, Nemmara, Kuzhalmannam, Chittur and Kollangode.
Amidst report of large scale damage to standing urad, moong and soyabean crops, uptrend continued in most of the pulse seeds at the mandis in Indore. Tur (Maharashtra) rose further to ₹7,100 a quintal, while tur (Nimari) rose to ₹5,800-6,800. In the past one week tur in Indore mandis has gained ₹200. Rise in tur has primarily been attributed to weak availability of domestic and imported lemon tur in Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata ports.
The Gujarat government on Monday announced ₹3,700-crore relief package for the farmers who suffered crop loss due to excess rains and flooding in several parts of the State. Making an announcement in the State Assembly, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani stated that total 37 lakh hectares of area under 123 tehsil (taluka) will qualify for the relief.
Estonian Horticultural Association (Aiandusliit) has estimated that the losses for the nation’s strawberry growers -mostly due to the pandemic and its associated labor shortages- constitute about 60-70 percent of the harvest. To combat this, the Ministry of Rural Affairs had promised a method for evaluating if, where and from what source strawberry growers' yield loss has derived, by the end of July.
In early August, the first estimate for the Washington apple crop predicted a crop volume of 134 million boxes (40 lb.), on par with the previous season of 133 million boxes. The prices of commonly consumed vegetables have shot up in the national capital as supply from major producing states have been reduced owing to crop losses caused by rains, according to traders. In the open market, retail prices of green vegetables like okra (bhindi), cabbage, green chilly, pointed gourds (parwal) among others were selling at Rs 60 per Kg and above.
