Scientists from Disruptive & Sustainable Technologies for Agricultural Precision (DiSTAP), an Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG) at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), MIT's research enterprise in Singapore, have engineered a novel type of plant nanobionic optical sensor that can detect and monitor, in real-time, levels of the highly toxic heavy metal arsenic in the belowground environment.
The data related to soil, water, crops and other attributes related to research activities are being uploaded in the system. In this project above 500 hectares of farm land of JNAU has been linked with the GPS system. INITIATING a step forward towards digitalisation in agriculture system the Jawaharlal Nehru Agriculture University (JNAU) has linked all its farms with the Global Positioning System (GPS) monitoring system.
The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT-R) claims to have developed a satellite-based online information system and mobile app for crop monitoring at district level in Uttarakhand. The electronics and communication engineering department of the institute, which developed the system, says that they may be able to extend the online platform country-wide in a year or more after uploading data from other states. The institute has also developed an app for mobile users to access the online information system.
The Central Indian region of Bundelkhand is currently experiencing severe drought. Once an ancient kingdom, but now straddling the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, around the city of Jhansi, the area remains relatively underdeveloped compared to other parts of India. Consequently many local people still rely on agriculture for their livelihoods. Faced with drought conditions, and with limited capacity for water storage, thousands of smallholder farmers will now face considerable hardship, or even destitution.

Soon after the recent rains hit hard the costal districts, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore, calculated how much cultivated area was inundated. It also estimated the loss of paddy in Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore and other districts. The University’s quick assessment and communication to the State Government is the result of the work it has been doing for four years now using images obtained from European Space Agency’s Sentinel 1A satellite. The University’s access to the satellite images follows a tie-up under the ‘Remote Sensing Information for Insurance on Crops in Emerging Economies’ project with the Swedish Developmental Council, International Rice Research Institute and Sarmap of Switzerland.
N.S.T. New Science Technologies Ltd. increases its capacities in order to meet a growing demand in Kazakhstan. The company declares its product, Cropio, to be a suitable tool for both an agricultural and state sector. Kazakhstan is considered to be the very first country in the Eurasian region to implement the satelite crop monitoring technology in order to facilitate development of the agricultural sector.
The map of cumulative precipitations from mid-June to mid-July 2012 shows different conditions over Ukraine. The level of precipitation at Western and Northern parts of the country is close to the normal conditions (from 45mm). In comparison, South and East of Ukraine during the same period had a very a few precipitations (sometimes below 8mm).
Drought is a complex, slow-onset phenomenon that affects more people than any other natural hazard and results in serious economic, social, and environmental impacts in both developing and developed countries. Drought conditions have been widespread in recent years in Europe, North Africa, the Mid-East and West Asian countries, India, China, North and Central America, and South America.
