Netherlands - Hail storm hit the Wijchen

"One large streak." This is how Frederik Bunt describes the hail storm that passed over his plum orchard in Wijchen, the Netherlands, earlier this week. The plums, estimated at about 20 000 to 25 000 kg, can all be considered lost. "It is not difficult to work out; the orchard was right in the hail storm's path", he says.
Nevertheless, the grower is not wholly disillusioned. B&B Fruit, the Bunt brothers, Marinus and Frederik's, company has a total of 50 hectares of plums. This makes it the largest plum farm in the Netherlands. "Percentage-wise, the damage is not too bad. It is, however, never nice to lose your crop. We have also not experienced hail damage like this in the last 30 years", says Frederick.
The first Dutch plums are expected in the third week of July. "The trees are full. We are busy thinning them out. We do, however, have quite big plums for this time of year", continues Frederick. "We purposefully expanded our cultivation to Nijmegen. In this way, we spread the risk."
As the only plum business in the Netherlands, B&B Fruit brings all the links in the plum chain together under one roof. From growing the fruit, through sorting and packing, to selling the fresh product. They process plums into juices, sauces, and various other products too. The Bunt brothers also manage a 20-hectare plum farm in Poland. This company was started for production for the Dutch market. Now, all the fruit is sold to local Polish retailers. Fredrick says, "There was also an unusual amount of hail in Poland. You can see the weather becoming more extreme."
The grower estimates the damage to be about EUR25,000. He cannot make up this loss. He is, based on religious beliefs, not insured against damage. He also does not have hail cannons or nets to protect the fruit. "I do not believe you can be insured against everything, all the time. The damage also does not weigh up against the premiums you have to pay over the years", he concludes.
