New Zealand - Significant crop losses are expected in the south after flooding ravaged several towns

All Mataura residents were able to return home last night – but some houses were flooded, forcing people into temporary accommodation.

Clutha-Southland MP, Hamish Walker, says a stock-take of damage to houses and the rural sector will be carried out over the next 48 hours.

He says he’s visited one farmer who’s lost close to 300 hectares of crops – so the cost of the losses across Southland will run into the tens of millions.
