Farmers can now for the first time insure their produce against price volatility as easily as insuring their homes, with a global platform based on hundreds of niche commodity indexes. Crop insurance has existed since the 1930s in the United States but is heavily subsidized by the government to provide protection against damage to produce and price risks. There have also been government-backed schemes in Canada and India.
Flood caused financial damages amounting to 30 trillion rials (about $714 million) only to Khuzestan province’s farming lands, Agriculture Minister Mahmoud Hojjati said. Horticulture, animal husbandry, apiculture and poultry farming have borne the most damages in agriculture sector, as some 600 poultry farms have been damaged across the country, he lamented.

The latest update by Devolution, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands CS Eugene Wamalwa says at least 1.1 million people are urgently in need of food aid in 13 drought-stricken counties.
The El Niño has already damaged P43.970 million worth of crops and livestock in Cebu Province, the Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported.
