The spring rains caused by westerly weather systems are not unusual in Pakistan. And it is also not unusual that they cause a lot of losses and damage. They unleash torrential downpours, trigger avalanches, and flooding and sometimes also usher in harsh winter weather. In some cases, the collateral hailstorms seriously damage the wheat crop.

As premier Imran Khan is having a hard time dealing with a 12-year-high inflation rate, one of Pakistan’s worst locust invasions has wreaked havoc on agricultural crops. A locust swarm has descended on the country’s Punjab province, the main agricultural region, along with cities across the Pakistan-India border.
After wreaking havoc on crops in parts of Sindh and Cholistan in Punjab, swarms of locusts have now invaded large swathes of suburban areas of Pakpattan district. Locusts have attacked standing crops, including wheat and vegetables, on thousands of acres in Kalyana, Hota and adjoining areas of the district, inflicting huge losses on farmers.
The farmers should make proper arrangements for removal of weeds on priority basis as these badly affect the yield and cause reduction in wheat production up to 42 per cent. A spokesman for agriculture department said weeds not only reduced quantity of crop production but also played a major role for damaging quality of grains.
After leaving their trail of destruction in Sindh and Punjab, swarms of locusts have now attacked crops in Kohlu district of Balochistan, ARY News reported on Monday. The swarms of crop eating grasshoppers are now reported to land in Mawand, Kunal, Manjhra, Kahan, Sardar Shahar, Oriani and adjoining areas of the district since a week and have badly affected the crops of wheat and onion.
