According to preliminary estimates, the production will be up to 30% lower than usual due to the impact of spring frosts, dry weather, heavy rainfall and floods. This will affect fruit prices, especially in the case of sweet cherries, sour cherries and apples. The situation is also unfavorable for the vegetable harvest. Adam Różycki, vice president of the "Cuiavia" Association, said that although fruit and vegetable prices are heavily dependent on the weather conditions, in Poland many farms still have poor irrigation infrastructure to help them cope with the effects of dry weather. "In the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship, this year's fruit harvest will fall by as much as 30 percent compared to a normal year. I think that in the country as a whole, this percentage will be very similar, given the impact of dry weather and subsequent storms," says Adam Rozycki, vice-president of the Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producers "Cuiavia". He stresses that compared to last year, the losses are even higher, because the fruit harvest then was record high. At the beginning of May, the Association of Polish Fruit Growers appealed to the Minister of Agriculture with a request to provide aid, following severe frosts that caused great losses affecting almost all fruit species. The worst hit were sour cherries, sweet cherries and apples.
