According to the Chairman of the Agrarian-Peasant Association public organization Hrach Berberyan, the reduction of the potato acreage in Armenia in 2019 reduced that country’s reserves by 30%. “Last year, the sowing of potatoes, which along with bread is of strategic importance, decreased, and this year its stocks in the country are 30 percent less,” the expert said.
In Uttar Pradesh, the largest tuber producing state in India, potato prices have spiked around 50%, as abnormally high rains this month have damaged crops and affected harvesting in the country. Prices are rising in other states as well, as traders anticipate lower-than-expected output in India, which in fact is the largest potato producing country after China.
Indian farmers have reported massive crop damage in transit in addition to huge quantity of the potato left unharvested due to muddy fields. In some places, potato prices have jumped by 25 per cent in a month due to crop damage and frequent hailstorms in major cultivating regions. The price currently stands at double than its quote around the same time last year.
Marie-Claude Bibeau, Canadian Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, spoke to growers from across the country at the Canadian Horticultural Council AGM in Ottawa and announced a federal investment of over $2.3 million to support the Canadian Horticultural Council's research into managing the Potato Early Dying (PED) disease.
Prices of many potatoes are going up at the grocery store. That's due largely to up to $10 million in recent losses of potato crops in the Skagit Valley. It's all about supply and demand. This shortage of crops has increased the prices of these potatoes for people at the grocery store. This is all according to agricultural expert Don McMoran at WSU.
Potato farmers in Skagit County suffered big losses last fall after they were unable to harvest some of their crops as a result of early and heavy rainfall. An estimated 2,000 acres of potatoes — valued at $3,000 to $5,000 an acre — went unharvested this season, said Don McMoran, director of the Washington State University Skagit County Extension.
With ten percent of last year’s potato crop still in the ground in Northern Ireland, some farmers have attempted make to use of recent good weather to try and salvage them. However, the sudden onslaught of Storm Ciara has knocked any chances of getting all the crop rescued this week into touch, according to growers.
Potato growers in the area are quite upbeat ahead of the harvest season. The crop was grown in approximately 6,230 acres in the city this season. Agriculture experts say that potato growers will reap rich dividends with high yield as mild rain at this time would prove to be conducive for growth of the crop. The rain has ended foggy conditions that affect its growth.
Fresh potato prices have roughly doubled after a poor growing year and a frosty harvest caused American production to drop 6% in 2019. Idaho spud growers who were able to get their harvest out of the ground, and who sell their spuds on the fresh market, are benefiting from the sky-high prices. Few of those growers are in the Magic Valley, where most producers sign contracts with major potato processors in order to lock in their prices.
NFU president Minnette Batters has stated that Britain could be facing a potato shortage after failure to dredge rivers led to flooding. She added that water has been managed in a "disgraceful" way. Up to 50 percent of this year's crop is rotting in the ground because farmers have been unable to harvest, Batters said, adding that she had "never seen so little winter planting in [her] working lifetime".
