At a time of year when Prince Edward Island farmers would normally be flat-out busy, most of their equipment is sitting idle as they wait for a break in the weather. Harris Callaghan, a potato grower from Miminegash, estimated spring planting in western P.E.I. is already at least a week behind schedule, and if the weather doesn’t soon turn, they’ll be two weeks behind.
The new Dutch potato season is beginning. It is expected that over two weeks, there will enough supply from the southwest of the country to start selling. The Dutch market is currently mostly being supplied by import potatoes. The old Dutch harvest is drying up. These potatoes were affected by last year's dry weather.
Pemberton potato grower Brett De Campo has ploughed in 120 tons of perfectly good potatoes this month and has given another 30 tons to a Busselton dairy farmer for cattle feed. He expects to walk away from another 120 tons before his harvest ends in mid-May, because of a glut in the market that has worsened since industry deregulation in 2016.
Phytophthora clone EU-13 was already known for being aggressive and difficult to combat. In recent years, two new clones have been on the rise in the northwest of Europe: Eu-36 and EU-37. These clones are supplanting EU-13. The characteristics that caused these two clones to expand has now been researched by Wageningen University & Research. This information allows the combat strategy of phytophthora to be improved.
The Spanish city of Antequera will harvest 25 percent less potato this year. This is mainly due to "the high temperatures recorded in August, which caused some potatoes to 'cook' in the ground," said Juan Antonio Romero, director of Horticultores El Torcal. This means that the harvested volume will amount to around 3 million kilos; a big difference compared to the previous campaign.
Recent figures disclosed by authorities in West Bengal have a disturbing news pertaining to the farmers. According to a recent survey in Midnapore district, a total loss of 968,45,00000 INR (about 968 crores) has occurred this Winter season due to loss of potato crop. This accounts to 2/3rd or 60-70% of the total potato production.
