Following the heavy rain in the region last week, some Teviot Valley orchardists are reporting damage to about half of their early ripening cherry crop. Some market gardeners will have to freeze their early strawberries, rather than sell them fresh, because of rain damage. The heavy rain also caused ripe cherries to split, making them unsuitable for selling.
The grape crop over 195 hectare across seven talukas of Sangli district has been badly hit owing to untimely rainfall since the last two days The district administration on Tuesday carried out a survey of the damage incurred and found that grape crop in Tasgaon, Palus, Khanapur and Atpadi talukas has been affected.
Fruit grower Bruce Hollabaugh is ready to turn the page on 2018. It started in early August with what he describes as the worst hail storm to ever hit his family's farm in Biglerville, Pa. "Because of its timing, in 10 minutes the storm reduced our peach crop by 75%, small fruits by 50% to 60%, pears by 50% and apples by about 35%," says Hollabaugh, the farm's production and field personnel manager.
The state-run Coffee Board has pegged the crop loss at 82,000 tonnes for the crop year 2018-19 starting October on account of the incessant South-West monsoon rains that has lashed the key growing regions in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu in recent months. This would mean that India's 2018-19 crop is likely to be lower by at least 26 per cent over the current year's crop size of 3.16 lakh tonnes.

The monsoon fury which impacted 48,000 hectares of plantations in the state is likely to have a prolonged effect on the commodities market, especially of spices, in the country. Numerous landslips, strong winds and inundation caused by heavy rains have adversely affected plantation crops such as ginger, black pepper, cardamom coffee, nutmeg, rubber and tea. Though an official estimate is yet to emerge, the quantum of immediate loss incurred by the state’s plantation sector is expected to touch Rs 800 crore.
With a demand to pay compensation of Rs 25,000 per acre of crop damaged due to heavy rains and flood, the farmers staged a dharna in front of office of the joint director of the agriculture department here on Tuesday. The farmers under the joint aegis of AP Kowlu Rythula Sangham and the AP Rytu Sangham also demanded that the government register names of tenant farmers while preparing crop loss list.
The season is almost coming to an end for the Greek peaches, which had a very long season to start with. Normally the season starts in June, but this year it started 15 days earlier. This season wasn’t without problems though. The rest of Europe was suffering from drought, but the Greek peach produce was affected by some rainy weather. Although half of the peaches will be sold locally, the other half will make its way into Europe.
Origine Cévennes is a group of producers specialised in the cultivation of sweet onions of the Cévennes. The producers are in the middle of the harvest. Carl Grandidier: "Despite the good quality of the onions, it will be a difficult season. Rain reduced production by 25% to 30%." The sweet onion of the Cévennes.
