A storm early last week claimed more than 600 hectares of crop for the Jenzen family, North Cunderdin. A whole crop of lupins was wiped out, with the majority of damage on nearby wheat crops. Norm Jenzen said they received 45 millimetres of rain on the southern block and only 18mm at the main shed, 10 kilometres north. “Our neighbours’ pasture paddock had run down and put silt up the side of our wheat crop because the rain just came down so quick and heavy,” Norm said.
The Portuguese government has set up two credit line totalling €5 million euros, to support producers affected by storm Leslie and summer heatwaves. "These two lines of credit, in a total amount of €5 million, are intended to cover the cash requirements and income losses resulting from drops in production," of members of industry organisations, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development said in a statement.
The total crop loss which was waiting for harvest during the Pongal season has been estimated to be over Rs 500 crore for the banana farmers alone as the plants were either totally uprooted or broken in the middle and blown away by the heavy wind. The damaged banana plants included mono-crop of banana as well as banana intercropped in coconut and other perennial crop orchards raised in the districts of Trichy, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Karur, Dindigul, Sivagangai and parts of Theni.

Chainsaws became the soundtrack this week as Arkansans cleaned up after storms July 21 unleashed a barrage of large hail, high winds and lightning that left behind downed trees, damaged homes, farms and businesses, and thousands without electricity. More than 63,000 people were without power as utilities scrambled to scout damage and bring linemen in other states to help restore electricity.
Owing to various catastrophes, the country’s agriculture sector witnessed loss amounting to Rs 10.89 billion in the ongoing fiscal year, according to statistics compiled by the Ministry of Agriculture, Land Management and Cooperatives (MoALMC). This accounts for the loss that the sector faced from floods and landslides triggered by the heavy monsoon rains, hailstorms and storms in the current fiscal 2017-18.
Wednesday's storms are an example of the severe weather we get in the La Crosse area. In a region with a high number of farmers, that severe weather can make for hardships during the growing season. With snow falling into May, weather already shortened this year's growing season. Different parts of the season bring new challenges for farmers.
On the first and the fourth of July, the southwest of France was struck by severe weather. The department of Landes, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, suffered rain, wind, and hailstones the size of a fist. Herwig Dejonghe, owner of Antarctic Foods Aquitaine: “Our first estimates indicate the storm damaged 15.000 hectares (over 37.000 acres) worth of products.”
Storms on Saturday across the southwest part of Hub Territory brought blessings in widespread rains of an inch or more, fear in funnel clouds that hung low and briefly touched down north of Wilcox and misery for farmers in Loomis, Funk and other areas to the southwest as hail shredded corn and soybean crops.
The storm produced baseball sized hail that caused significant damage to some of the fields around Arapahoe. Corn was knocked down and beans were shredded as the storm passed through the area. One resident we spoke to said the storm started small with just a light rain before the hail started to make things serious.
