The Louisiana sugarcane industry by itself is worth 3 billion dollars and generates an estimated 16,000 jobs, according to the USDA. However, a sparse winter could be setting up the next sugarcane crop for diseases.
The farmers should make proper arrangements for removal of weeds on priority basis as these badly affect the yield and cause reduction in wheat production up to 42 per cent. A spokesman for agriculture department said weeds not only reduced quantity of crop production but also played a major role for damaging quality of grains.
The Lovell Western Sugar Factory District saw a 41 percent total production loss from storms this fall, according to statistics reported to the USDA by Western Sugar. USDA Big Horn County Farm Service Agency Executive Director Brenda Miller said Rebecca Larson, Western Sugar government liaison, reported that the factory district had a 12 percent reduction in yield and lost 5,062 acres due to frost this season, or a total of 29.3 percent of acreage planted.

Yellow Aphid pest causes yellowing of leaves before they dry up.Isaac Koti, from Muting’ong’o in Malava sub-county, said he had lost his entire crop, on four acres, to the pest.Koti said the pest had invaded several farms, not just in Malava, but in other sub-counties as well. He said many farmers uprooted their crop after it was affected.

Brazil’s center-south is likely to produce an even smaller amount of sugar next year after a sharp drop reported in the current crop, as a harsh drought and reduced crop care will lead to a poor cane harvest, according to industry representatives.
