Taiwan - Farming losses from Tropical Storm Bailu hit NT$87.90 million

Taiwan's agricultural losses from the damage wrought by Tropical Storm Bailu over the weekend were estimated at NT$87.90 million (US$2.79 million) as of Monday but are likely to go up as more damage is reported.
According to the Council of Agriculture, Taitung County was the hardest hit of any locality in Taiwan, with losses estimated at NT$54.06 million so far.
It was followed by Pingtung County with losses of NT$23.53 million, Kaohsiung with losses of NT$5.23 million, and Hualien County with losses of NT$4.44 million.
The most heavily damaged crop was bananas, with 695 hectares ravaged, resulting in losses of NT$38.16 million, the COA said.
Sugar apples were also hurt, with losses estimated at NT$21.55 million thus far, followed by lemons, papaya and ginger.
Agricultural equipment and facilities across Hualien County, Pingtung County and Kaohsiung were also affected, suffering NT$4.2 million in damage due to the storm, the COA said.
According to COA's website, the government has announced that banana and sugar apple farmers in Taitung County will be eligible to receive government subsidies and low interest loans to help them recover more quickly from the losses caused by the rains.
