While Florida and California accounted for 76 percent of U.S. production of field-grown tomatoes in 2016, greenhouse production and use of other protected-culture technologies help extend the growing season and make production feasible in a wider variety of geographic locations. Some greenhouse production is clustered in traditional field-grown-tomato-producing States like California.
Farmers in Katsina State have expressed concern over the early rainfall experienced recently in some parts of the state. There are fears this will have a damaging effect on tomato especially. Early rainfall is said to generate heat which destroys the tomato plant; it also occasions the early evolution of pests especially tuta absoluta which damages the fruit.
A Spanish study on the adaptation of long shelf-life Mediterranean tomatoes grown in greenhouses and open fields was issued on 4th December 2018. Long shelf-life tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) landraces, characterized by carrying the alc allele in the NOR.NAC locus, have been traditionally cultivated in the Mediterranean region.
French tomato producers underwent a rather complicated season. After a spring with adverse weather conditions, the country is suffering from hot weather this summer with more production than demand. Marine Bougeard of Prince de Bretagne: "At the producer level, the 2018 season is really atypical." Amounts are greater than other years. "As the weather conditions were really specific, with record temperatures in the month of July, there’s a great amount on the market.
Weather conditions are finally improving for Romanian vegetable growers, after a cold and dry start to the season. There were new challenges last week, with rains continuing for 7 days and 7 nights in some regions. Scientists have been warning local consumers to be cautions consuming vegetables affected by the damp conditions because the products could be infected with mould and harmful bacteria
Coldiretti Reggio Calabria reported that strong winds and storms have hit the Ionian coast of the Reggio Calabria province for over 22 hours on 3rd and 4th January 2018. Surveys are underway to assess the damage. The municipalities of Bianco, Africo, Brancaleone, Palizzi, Bova, Bova Marina, Condofuri, San Lorenzo, Roghudi, Roccaforte and Montebello Ionico were particularly affected.
Agrobay, a company based in the Aegean province of İzmir, is Turkey’s largest tomato exporter. It currently produces 15,000 tons of tomatoes in greenhouses that utilise the thermal waters dotted across western Turkey. In the Dikili-Bergama region there are hundreds of geothermal fields where underground waters can reach temperatures of up to 287 C, according to Stanford University in the US.
Wilt disease in standing tomato crops has severely hit farmers of Nuagaon block in Sundargarh district. While the total area under horticulture crops in the block is 2,000 to 2,200 hectares, 70 per cent of the land is under tomato cultivation.Wilt disease in the tomato crops was first reported from Sorda gram panchayat (GP) a fortnight back and now the disease is spreading to newer areas.
The weather strongly affected the Sicilian tomato production. There have been serious virus problems right from the start (September 2016), so plants had to be uprooted and replanted in many of the companies in the south-west of the island. Then, in January 2017, frost compromised production once again causing mould problems. Just a few weeks later, many areas were flooded. All these problems reduced quantities available, leading to high prices.
Various areas in Italy are suffering because of the drought and Parma and Piacenza declared the state of natural disaster. It hasn't rained for months and forecasts say it won't rain in the next few days as well. Industry tomatoes are suffering the most, which is rather problematic as a lot of people are employed in this sector. In 2015, national production was 5.4 million tons with a turnover of around €3.1 billion, meaning Italy is the second leading producer after the US and before China.
