USA - Drought conditions wreak havoc on dry land cotton crop

Farmers in the Texas Panhandle are facing the effects of drought conditions this summer which is keeping dry land cotton from growing. 90% of dry land cotton in Carson County didn’t even sprout this summer. “Unfortunately this is like the third year in a row," said Justin Dauer, farmer. It’s a problem that is becoming more frequent where dry land cotton planted on land in the Texas Panhandle is not growing due to drought conditions. Dauer tells ABC 7 News farming is becoming more expensive at a time when prices for products are leveling off or going down. “The input costs are continuing to rise and the price of cotton is not very good," said Dauer. "It’s like a double whammy, can’t produce it and it’s not worth anything if you do.” Dauer shared a few tips that can potentially provide financial relief so all is not lost for the Ag producer. “Federal crop insurance that helps but it never makes you whole so collect that and try to keep your expenses low," said Dauer. The United States Department of Agriculture is offering relief by way of Farm Service Agency emergency loans. Nine counties in the Texas Panhandle have been designated as primary natural disaster areas with eleven more and three counties in New Mexico also eligible to apply for a loan. Experienced farmers say the emergency loan is really only helpful for new farmers who have not built up equity. “From what I understand by the time you get approved and get all the finances it’s you know, it’s so delayed that it’s kind of too late, often times," said Dauer. Farmers are hopeful that favorable weather in the fall can relieve some of the burden and help offset the financial losses from the summer. “This year we'll need a good fall," said Dauer. "We don’t need an early freeze and we can use the prices to recover or inputs to go down or all the above.” With the failure of dry land cotton, after grain sorghum is harvested, wheat can be planted in September or October to be harvested in the spring. Farmers have until March 16 of 2021, to apply for an emergency loan and can do so by contacting their local USDA Service Center. Farmers must meet eligibility requirements and application procedures for the financial assistance. Source - https://abc7amarillo.com
