Spain - Unións Agrarias urges the Xunta to act on the damage caused by wild boars to corn

Unións Agrarias (UU.AA.) has called for immediate intervention from the Xunta in response to the damage caused by wild boar to corn crops on "numerous farms" in the province of A Coruña.

In a press release, the organization warns that the protests "are especially intense" in regions such as Bergantiños, Ordes, Compostela, Xallas, Ortegal, and Costa da Morte, where these are not isolated incidents, but rather "authentic wild boar herds."

The agricultural entity demands the urgent involvement of hunting grounds (tecores) and hunting societies, which "must proactively engage in damage prevention and the execution of deterrent and palliative actions wherever necessary."

Furthermore, Unións Agrarias calls on the Ministry of Environment to "expeditiously facilitate the necessary authorizations and apply intervention protocols with the flexibility that the regulations themselves allow when there is significant crop damage."

The organization recalls that forage corn is an essential element in the feeding of dairy and beef farms, in a scenario where feed and forage can account for around 60% of production costs.

According to the latest official data, 44,808 hectares of forage corn are cultivated in the province of A Coruña, out of a total of 72,305 hectares in all of Galicia. The value of this production exceeds 130 million euros. "This means that every 1% of affected surface can represent around 1.3 million euros in economic impact," the organization indicates.

UU.AA. also dismisses the current aid system for professional farms as "insufficient," as the regional call sets a maximum of 2,750 euros per beneficiary. "This amount can fall far short of the actual damage when a farm suffers significant damage in several plots or is forced to replant," it adds.
