The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board announced that a new insurance scheme has been introduced for potato and vegetable cultivations to protect farmers against potential risks.
Under this scheme, insurance coverage will be extended to various crops recommended by the Department of Agriculture, including sweet potato, cassava, taro (kiri ala), beetroot, cabbage, carrot, leeks, eggplant, okra, beans, capsicum, tomato, bitter gourd, and pumpkin.
Farmers can obtain coverage by paying a premium of just 7% of the basic sum insured. The policy covers crop damages caused by natural disasters, uncontrollable plant diseases, pest infestations, as well as attacks by wild elephants.
The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board stated that the primary objective of this insurance scheme is to encourage farmers to remain continuously engaged in agriculture by effectively managing their cultivation risks.
