India - Wind and hailstorms damage fruit and vegetables

Strong wind and hailstorm have caused heavy loss to seasonal vegetables and fruit crops in most places of Himachal Pradesh. Deputy Director Horticultre Subash Dhiman said here that rough and adverse weather conditions including hail, wind-strom and sudden droping of Mecury recorded irreparable loss to fruits like Apple, Pears, Cherries, Mango, Appricot, Peach, Plums, Lichi, Citrus fruit like Kino, Lemon and Galgal in many part of Shimla, Sirmaur, Mandi, Kullu and Solan district. Mr Dhiman said that this summer season mark total loss of about Rs 24 million as Rs 6 million loss was rendered by the Tuesday alone. "Pomes and stone fruits corp in initial and juvenile stage are more vulnerable to such erratic and rough weather conditions" he added. Despite apple growers has covered their canopy of about 50 to 60 per cent crop by hail-nets this year however most hail prone areas and less prone have lost their fruit crops in very advance stage of growth and smashed by the high speed strong winds.
