The crops of the Region of Murcia have suffered the consequences of the first spring frosts, after the minimum temperatures dropped as low as five degrees below zero between March 23 and 26, causing losses estimated at 14.7 million Euro. The most affected areas are those of the Altiplano, Alto Guadalentín, Vega Alta and Northwest, namely Jumilla, with 2,825 hectares, Lorca (1,530 ha), Caravaca (904), Yecla (850), Moratalla (716), Cehegín (584) and Bullas (229 hectares). However, damage has also been recorded in the Rio Mula county and other areas of the Region. The Councilor of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Angel del Amor, visited Jumilla to check the damage caused by these frosts, where he reported that "the most damaged crops have been almond, apricot, peach, nectarine and tomato." He also said that "the Northwest of the Region suffered losses worth 7.3 million Euro, the Altiplano, 5.9 million, and the Alto Guadalentin, 1.4 million Euro." "After a few days, we'll be able to assess the actual extent of the impact, both on early and late varieties, since the ice can take a toll on the fruit and the flower," said Del Amor, who stressed that "once the assessments have been completed and we have a full damage report, the Ministry of Agriculture will be asked to grant tax reductions to the producers affected."
