Hailstorms and heavy rain caused significant damage in the fig gardens of Tire, Izmir, located on western coast of Turkey. The rain continued for 2 days and the growers are asking for government officials to lend a helping hand in recovering from their losses.
Grower Tugay Sert: “The economic damage is extensive. Last year I received around 1 ton of products, this year I don’t think I will come close to that number at all. Heavy rain suddenly turned into a hailstorm which damaged the leaves on trees and created holes in them. Most of my figs are damaged and had to be thrown out.”
