This year’s winter wheat crop is in poor condition due to winterkill and even though the spring wheat is off to a good start it may not make up for the shortfall. This week’s crop progress report showed 78-percent of the winter wheat is in fair to very poor condition. South Dakota Wheat Commission Executive Director Reid Christopherson says there are still farmers accessing damage with their crop insurance adjustors.
In the state 96-percent of the spring wheat has been planted and 71-percent is emerged, which is well ahead of the 43-percent average. However, Christopherson says there’s a lot of the growing season remaining.
Nationally spring wheat planting is also well ahead of normal at 87-percent, with 54-percent emerged.
