Dundee, Scotland-based aquaculture technology company Ace Aquatec has signed a deal with Japanese trout aquaculture producer FRD to manufacture a bespoke trout-stunning system for the latter firm.

The system will integrate into FRD's Japan land-based recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), meeting organizational standards for biosecurity, fish welfare, and operational efficiency.

The system, which was built specifically for FRD, processes up to 30 metric tons of steelhead trout per hour while recycling water back into the facility. It is designed to operate as a bridge between FRD’s growing and processing facilities, using advanced pumping technology to optimize transfer processes between the two areas of the farm. The system uses automated handling and monitoring systems to protect fish welfare.

Since its founding in 1999, Ace Aquatec has placed a high premium on animal welfare. Winner of the 2019 Global Aquaculture Innovation Award for one of its early model humane stunners, the firm has been at the forefront of industry conversation about humane slaughter practices and has produced bespoke stunners to meet the diverse needs of a variety of aquaculture operations.
