To protect the local poultry sector from the growing threat of Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird flu, the Ministry of Agriculture is strengthening its multi-layered border control strategy.
This includes heightened surveillance and stricter screening of high-risk agricultural imports.
Speaking at the Caribbean Poultry Association’s 8th International Technical Symposium in Kingston today, Portfolio Minister Floyd Green said the move is part of wider efforts to protect Jamaica’s poultry industry from the virus.
Minister Green said the Government is taking a firm “prevention is better than cure” approach to guard against the growing global threat.
With the highly pathogenic strain of the virus affecting poultry sectors worldwide, he stressed the importance of “exclusion” as a more sustainable long-term strategy.
