South Australia has been battered by wild weather over the past week with heavy rains causing significant disruptions across the region. However, the state’s cherry season remains strong despite the downpour.
Cherry orchards in the picturesque Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula took a hit due to the unrelenting rain, resulting in substantial losses for growers. While the initial outlook seemed grim, the skies have finally cleared, allowing growers to ramp up their picking efforts to salvage the delectable cherries in time for the festive season.
“We are feeling positive despite the circumstances, as our Lapin cherries have been holding up well, and we will continue picking this week. Thank you to those who came out in the rain to support us over the weekend,” Lennane Orchards said in a Facebook post.
Local retailers and markets may experience slightly lower supplies compared to previous years, but there’s no need to fret. Cherries will still be available for purchase, allowing South Australians to enjoy these juicy treats during Christmas week.
It’s worth noting that pricing may be a tad higher this year due to the initial supply constraints caused by the rainy weather.
Fleurieu Cherries shared some cherry facts to help the public understand the effect that raid has on their crop.
– Cherries HATE the rain. Just a tiny bit can cause splitting and turns a premium cherry into rubbish.
– They only get one shot at a crop, unlike other fruits this time of the year that keep producing more.
– Cherries don’t ripen off the tree. Once picked, that’s as ripe as it will ever be.
– If picked in the rain or heat the shelf life of cherries is greatly reduced.
Adelaide Hills, renowned for its cherry orchards, will be the go-to destination for cherry enthusiasts. Residents and visitors alike can savour the joy of picking their own cherries, creating a unique and memorable experience while taking in the natural beauty of the Adelaide Hills environment.
Cherry picking opportunities will be available in various locations, including Verdun, Ashton, Lenswood, Kersbrook, Gumeracha and more.
For those planning a cherry-picking adventure, the Fresh Fruit App is a resource, providing up-to-date information on cherry availability and opening times.
Local growers are working diligently to ensure that cherries remain a highlight of the holiday season despite the challenges they’ve faced. If you can this season, support local!
