Planting too early or too late can cost farmers part of their harvest. Cameroon’s National Observatory on Climate Change, or ONACC, has now set rainfall and planting windows for the second 2026 farming season across the country’s southern regions, giving producers a tool to reduce weather-related crop losses.
The calendar covers the Center, East, South, West, Northwest, Southwest and Littoral regions, with guidance spanning August through November 2026. It comes at a time when climate change is making traditional farming calendars less reliable and complicating decisions about when to prepare fields and plant crops.
A key feature of ONACC’s guidance is the distinction between the expected start of the rainy season and the recommended planting period. For farmers, the difference matters: the first rainfall does not necessarily mean that conditions are stable enough to plant.
In the South region, southern parts of the Center and southern East, the main rainy season is expected to begin between Aug. 17 and Aug. 29. Planting is recommended slightly later, between Aug. 19 and Aug. 31.
The gap is intended to reduce the risk of farmers planting after an isolated rainfall only to face a prolonged dry spell that could damage young crops.
In central and northern parts of the Center region, rains are expected to begin between Aug. 23 and Aug. 29, with planting recommended between Aug. 25 and Aug. 31. The guidance covers areas including Mfoundi, Lékié, Mefou-et-Afamba, Haute-Sanaga, Mbam-et-Inoubou and Mbam-et-Kim.
Planting Windows Vary by Area
ONACC has not set a single planting date for the entire southern part of the country. Instead, the recommended windows reflect differences in rainfall patterns between areas.
In parts of northern East, including Bagbel, Garoua-Boulaï, Mbitom, Kongolo, Bongon and Bodomo, as well as some areas of the South and Center regions, planting is recommended between Aug. 15 and Aug. 31.
The calendar also covers the highlands of the West and Northwest and the single-rainy-season forest areas of the Littoral and Southwest.
Such local differences matter because rainfall patterns can vary considerably from one region, and even one administrative division, to another. A single nationwide planting date could therefore leave some farmers planting either too early or too late.
Poor timing can affect yields from the start of the growing cycle. Too little water during germination can prevent crops from developing properly, while excessive rainfall after planting can increase runoff, soil erosion and the loss of seeds and nutrients.
Climate change adds another layer of uncertainty by altering seasonal patterns and making dry spells and periods of intense rainfall harder to anticipate. Climate information is therefore becoming an increasingly important tool for managing agricultural risk.
Better Timing Can Protect Farm Income
For farmers, planting forecasts also have an economic value beyond the fields themselves. Knowing the likely rainfall and planting windows can help them decide when to prepare land, buy seeds, hire workers and schedule other farming operations.
That is particularly important for small family farms with limited financial resources. A failed planting can mean lower output and income, along with additional spending if fields have to be replanted.
By providing planting windows rather than simply forecasting the arrival of the rains, ONACC aims to turn climate information into practical guidance for farm decisions.
The impact will ultimately depend on whether the information reaches farmers in time to shape those decisions. If it does, more precise planting schedules could help producers reduce avoidable losses at a time when increasingly unpredictable weather is making the agricultural calendar harder to manage.
