Egypt - Difficult start to the season of pomegranates

Like many other crops in other parts of the world, the pomegranate sector in Egypt is suffering this year from the effects of constantly rising temperatures and heat waves. Mina Antony, CEO of E2M, reports a difficult start to the campaign.

The pomegranate season in Egypt is stumbling at its first steps. Mina explains: "The acreage of pomegranate has not changed from last season in Egypt, but yields have dropped due to unfavorable weather conditions. We experienced heat waves and temperatures reached extreme levels. In addition to lower volumes, it's difficult to source good quality at the start of the campaign."

"Only variety 116 is available now, and we're not focused on this variety anyway. We are therefore waiting for the harvest of the Wonderful variety, towards the end of September, for an effective start to the campaign with better volumes and quality," adds the grower.

Demand for Egyptian pomegranates is nevertheless strong, but Mina remains cautious: "For the few containers loaded since the start of the campaign, we are seeing strong demand from Europe, Hong Kong, Singapore, Russia, and Indonesia. However, it's still early to make an assessment of the season, as only a small quantity has been loaded."

As for prices, the producer said they remained relatively stable, with slight increases to keep pace with inflation. with slight increases to keep pace with inflation.
