April frosts have seriously damaged seasonal fruit crops in Georgia, according to agronomist and farmer Akaki Glonti, who commented on the situation amid continuing price growth.
The cold snap came during active vegetation, when buds were forming, and flowering had begun. According to Glonti, this made the damage especially severe.
The lowland areas of Guria were affected most. In several settlements, the kiwi crop was almost completely lost. In the Ozurgeti municipality, there will be almost nothing to harvest this year because frost damaged the flowers, preventing fruit formation. Some crops remain only in warmer locations such as Zemo Natanebi.
In addition to kiwi, persimmons, figs, peaches, plums, and tkemali were also seriously affected by the cold. Glonti said many crops in the flowering and vegetation stage were almost destroyed. He said the situation is especially difficult for tkemali, one of Georgia's most popular seasonal crops. Farmers warn that the spring frosts may lead to shortages of some fruits and further price increases for local produce.
