India - Algae growth rattles paddy farmers

Unbridled growth of algae in samba paddy fields of Anthanallur block in Trichy has become a matter of concern for farmers. The agriculture department has sent samples of soil and water to Tamil Nad Agriculture University for scientific analysis.

Farmers in several villages of Anthanallur union say the green organisms have stalled the growth of standing crops and will ultimately bring down yield.

Paddy raised in about 500 acres has been affected, they say. Joint director of agriculture Sakthivel visited the affected fields on Wednesday along with a scientist and took stock of the situation.

Officials said algae are predominantly aquatic, photosynthetic and nucleus-bearing organisms that lack true roots, stems, leaves and specialized multicellular reproductive structures of plants.

They affect aeration, block sunlight and compete with the plant for nutrition, which will bring down growth of the crop as well as yield, officials said.

"After visiting fields in Anthanallur union, we noticed that standing samba paddy crops in several acres have been affected. We have recommended various measures to control the organism.

Usage of well water and excessive use of chemical fertilizers may be one of the reasons for the situation. We have sent water and soil samples to TAU for analysis. Based on their recommendations, farmers will be informed of the control measures," the joint director told TOI. Officials have planned to hold camps to educate farmers on control measures in a few days.
