Shift animals to elevated locations in advance and maintain adequate stock of dry fodder, Atchannaidu tells cattle-rearers; he also advises them to make use of government facilities such as livestock insurance, subsidised feed and fodder, and Gokulams.

Animal Husbandry Minister K. Atchannaidu has urged those rearing livestock across Andhra Pradesh to take precautionary measures to protect cattle, sheep, goats and other animals in view of the heavy rains under the influence of deep depression in the Bay.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mr. Atchannaidu advised them to follow the weather and district administration advisories, and shift livestock to safe, elevated locations in advance. They were also asked to maintain adequate stocks of dry fodder and avoid feeding wet, mouldy or fungus-affected feed.

The livestock-rearers were also advised to provide animals clean drinking water and avoid stagnant or contaminated water sources. Calves should be kept in dry shelters, while animals should not be left in waterlogged or muddy areas for prolonged periods as this could lead to foot infections.

During thunderstorms and lightning, livestock should be moved away from weak structures, trees and electricity poles. In flood-prone areas, animals should not be tethered and should be shifted to safer, elevated ground.

The department advised the rearers to immediately inform the nearest veterinary officer in case of livestock mortality. Carcasses should be disposed of scientifically as per veterinary guidelines, and should not be dumped in water bodies or open areas.

Mr. Atchannaidu urged them to make use of government facilities, including livestock insurance, subsidised feed and fodder, Gokulams, and free vaccination and deworming services.

Director of Animal Husbandry R. Amarendra Kumar appealed to the rearers to prioritise their own safety during emergencies and contact the nearest veterinary officer promptly in case of animal illness or mortality.
